Tribute to My Grandmother Harlee
by: Lina Musick 5-12-03
This is just a short glimpse of my Grandma Musick. I trust that it will give you a 3-D view of a wonderful lady. Someone whom I appreciate and wish that I had known more. I am thankful for the time we spent together, especially those visits during the last few years of her life.

Name: The reason her grandchildren called Harlee by her first name was due to Grandpa's mischievous streak. He would give her oldest grandson a nickel to call her Harlee instead of Grandma, because he knew it would aggravate her. Indeed Grandpa had a mischievous streak. Growing up I did not know that she wanted us to call her anything else. The name Harlee holds a special place in my heart and I hope she knew that.

Her hobbies include:

Music - Harlee played the piano, organ, and guitar. She played music for the local church when needed. She loved God and was always willing to lend a helping hand where ever needed.

Art - She was a good artist (realistic style) – Lina has one of the pencil sketches she drew of some of her grandchildren in 1972.

Nature – She loved nature and travel. One of her goals was to learn the names of ever flower she found. She saw God’s beauty in the nature around her.

Alaska: Harlee longed to visit Alaska, but never got the opportunity visit in person. Gary, a close friend, taught her that she could experience many adventures, cultures and other countries by reading good books. Such books were found in her home. Harlee would read up on a country, then she and Gary would visit a restaurant, or prepare a meal from that country to get more of a in depth experience of what it would be like to visit such a place. A few of the places included Alaska, different Oriental countries and U.S. National Parks.

TV: The only TV show I ever heard Harlee talk about was M*A*S*H*, which was a show about army doctors stationed in Korea during 1950-1953. She told me it was her favorite show. M*A*S*H* is also one of my favorite shows, because I had been a missionary assistant to Korea for six months in 1981. Hummm? I wonder who her favorite character of that show was.

Pet: Her beloved pet and companion for many years was a Big German Shepherd named Prince. She had him for more than 10 years. I am thankful she had someone like Prince to lean on after all the children had grown up, because she was separated from her husband.

Other Talents: I’ve been told that my Grandmother built a house herself. Her father was unable to do the work himself, so he would instruct her on the process. She would cut, nail and hammer until they had a roof over their heads. I have to check on the details such as how old she was at the time. I am not sure if she had any help other than her father’s supervision.

Personal note: I am thankful that during the last few years of Harlee's life, I was old enough to visit her on my own and get to know my Grandmother on an adult level. She no longer saw me as "one of the kids". It was during those "one-on-one" visits that I learned so much about my Grandmother, her life, her desires and dreams. Indeed I am among the blessed, for those visits taught me more than I could ever learn second hand.

I write this tribute to my Grandma Musick, because I think she was a wonderful and talented person. As always there is so much more I could write about Harlee, but that would take a book. For now you have been given the privilege to glimpse a small part of her life. Thank you for letting me share my heart and thoughts.
